Heavy Rain, Hail, High Winds Impact Saskatchewan Crops

Farmscape for July 15, 2016

Heavy rainfall, hail and lodging caused by severe winds have taken a toll on crops across Saskatchewan over the past week.
Saskatchewan Agriculture released its Crop Report for the period from July 5 to 11 yesterday.
Brent Flaten, an Integrated Pest Management Specialist with Saskatchewan Agriculture, says the big issue was big rainfall event that rolled through from Sunday through to Wednesday.

Clip-Brent Flaten-Saskatchewan Agriculture:
Definitely some very high rainfall areas with flooding, some hail associated with some of those storm cells, lodged crops from the wind and the rain so lots of issues there.
As far as the rainfall goes it's highly variable, anything from less than 10 millimeters to well over 100 millimeters depending on where the system sat more and individual storm cells.
The biggest rainfall events were kind of in an angled Y shape through the province.
It started in, if you drew a thick line from Val Marie, Swift Current, Outlook and then in through Watrous and Melfort, Nipawin, Hudson Bay, that was a big area of wetness.
Then there was a branch that went through by North Battleford up to Meadow Lake and then also down to Llyodminster.
Those areas received anywhere from 75 to well over 100 millimeters of rain.
And the extreme southeast part of the province, Estevan to Maryfield where areas in the extreme southeast that received a lot of rain.

Flaten says the extreme weather covered quite a bit of the grainbelt and, in fact, at this point 33 percent of the cropland in the province is rated as having surplus moisture.
